After Smith was not selected in the 2013 NFL Draft, Cleveland invited him to attend their rookie mini-camp on a tryout basis earlier this month.

Those at KLASS Sports say Cleveland was intrigued with Smith’s ability to play fullback, however, he was specifically brought in to compete at inside linebacker.

Smith joins fellow Boise State alumnus Billy Winn on the Browns roster. Winn was drafted in the sixth round of the 2012 NFL Draft.

#7SportsInsider
- Smith played in all 13 games for Boise State last season and recorded 61 tackles. He becomes just the second player off last year’s Boise State team to land a rookie free-agent deal. Former Bronco runningback D.J. Harper agreed to terms with the San Francisco 49ers on April 29.
- Cleveland had an interesting draft this year. With a new regime in place, the Browns made a number of trades and only ended up selecting five players in the 2013 NFL Draft.

— Jay Tust (Follow on Twitter: @KTVBSportsGuy)

ISBOE approves $2 million request for new video board at Bronco Stadium

The Idaho State Board of Education approved a $2 million request from Boise State Athletics for the purchase of a new video board for Bronco Stadium on Wednesday.

The new video board will measure approximately 33-feet by 60-feet and include sound baskets and permanent advertising panels on the top and bottom.

“We are constantly and aggressively looking for ways to enhance the fan experience at Bronco Stadium,” Director of Athletics Mark Coyle said. “A new video board is a priority for us, and one of the first steps in moving in that direction is gaining approval from the State Board of Education. We appreciate the Board’s support as we move forward.”

The proposed funding sources include $1 million in donations, $750,000 from athletic reserves and a $250,000 stipend from Learfield Equipment.

A completion date was not provided. Stockton won the series four games to one, and advances to the ECHL Kelly Cup Finals where it will face Reading.

The Steelheads couldn’t find an answer for Thunder net-minder Olivier Roy. The standout goalie stopped 44-of-45 shots on goal in the win.

Idaho had plenty of chances to tie the game. The Steelheads outshot the Thunder 45 to 28. But the only shot that found the back of the net came off the stick of Tyler Gron, who hammered a redirected shot past Roy in the second period.

Josh Robinson stopped 26-of-28 shots on goal in defeat.

Former Boise State wide receiver Titus Young was arrested twice in a 15-hour time span on Sunday in California, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

According to a police report, Young was arrested just after midnight on Sunday morning on suspicion of driving under the influence. He was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center in southern California, and later issued a citation and released from custody.

Hours later, at 2:22 p.m., police responded to a call from an impound yard and found Young inside looking for his black Mustang, which had been towed and impounded when he was arrested earlier that day. He had climbed the fence to get into the yard. Police arrested Young a second time for burglary and once again booked him at the same detention center.

Young has had a rough couple of months recently. He was released by the Detroit Lions in February, only to be claimed by the St. Louis Rams. The Rams released Young a few days later, and he currently is not on an NFL team.

Young was a second-round draft pick in 2011.

Here is the police report from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department:

On May 5, 2013, at 12:01 AM, an officer with the Moreno Valley Police Department conducted a traffic stop on black mustang after the driver drove into oncoming traffic, making an illegal left turn directly in front of the patrol car. The officer initiated a traffic enforcement stop at the intersection of Perris boulevard and Cottonwood Avenue. The driver, later identified as Titus Young, a 23-year-old resident of Los Angeles, was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence. He was booked at the Robert Presley Detention Center. He was later issued a citation and released from custody.

At 2:22 PM, that same day, officers from the Moreno Valley Police Department responded to a tow company yard in the 17000 block of Kitching after an adult male was seen jumping over the fence into the storage area of the tow company. The male was located by responding officers and later identified as Titus Young. Further investigation determined Young was attempting to take his vehicle, which had been towed and stored after his arrest for driving under the influence. Young was arrested and booked at the Robert Presley Detention Center for burglary.

Although Cleveland is intrigued by Smith’s ability to play fullback, a source says he is being brought in specifically to tryout at inside linebacker.

Leading up to the 2013 NFL Draft, both Atlanta and Miami showed the most interest in Smith. I’m told Cleveland stepped up it’s pursuit after a multitude of trades left them with just five picks.

The Browns currently have ten linebackers on their roster, however, they are considered to be thin on the inside.

Harper has landed with the San Francisco 49ers according to his twitter account.

On Monday morning, Harper tweeted “signed with the niner!!!thanks to all my family and friends for the support!!!!”

Harper rushed for a career-high 1,137 yards as a senior last fall and scored a total of 41 touchdowns throughout his six years at Boise State.

Currently, the 49ers have plenty of options at running back. While eighth-year veteran Frank Gore remains the starter, over the last three years San Francisco has added Kendall Hunter and LaMichael James to the mix, along with 2013 NFL Draft pick Marcus Lattimore.

Harper becomes the latest running back with an injury riddled past that San Francisco has on its roster. Both Gore and Lattimore each suffered multiple knee injuries in during their collegiate careers.

#7SportsInsider
- A source says that former Boise State linebacker Tommy Smith has seen “zero love” in the free-agent field. The same source added that at the moment it “does not look good,” referring to his chances of signing a contract.

The win marks the 14th conference championship in program history.

With the team score tied at 3-3, all eyes focused on the No. 2 match between Boise State’s Nathan Sereke and New Mexico’s Conor Berg. The match went to a third set, in which Berg forced a crucial break to go up 4-2. Sereke was able to rally back, though, and forced a tie-breaker, which he won 7-4.

“This was absolutely one of the most thrilling college tennis matches I have seen, and I’ve been around a lot of college tennis,” said head coach Greg Patton. “It was magical, Nathan was a lion king out there.”

The last time the Broncos won back-to-back conference championships was in 2006 and 2007.

Boise State now advances to the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Broncos will find out where they will be sent for the first round on Tuesday.

He agreed to a tryout at the Bucs’ rookie mini-camp, which runs Friday through Sunday.

Harper is hoping to hear his name called somewhere between fourth and seventh rounds.

When it comes to running backs it has been an interesting draft. For the first time in 49 years the first round passed without a single one being drafted.

Through the first 97 picks, only six running backs were picked. With just 157 selections left, there appears to be a long-jam of talent at the position, which could hurt the 23-year-old Harper.

Top Available Running Backs
Kenjon Barner, Oregon
- Finally got the lead role as a senior. Averaged 6.4 yards a carry. Finished with 1,767 yards on the ground and 23 total touchdowns.

Andre, Ellington, Clemson
- Finished collegiate career with back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons.

Johnathan Franklin, UCLA
- The Bruin workhorse rushed for single-season school-record 1,734 yards in 2012, en route to a UCLA all-time record 4,403 career rushing yards.

Mike Gillislee, Florida
- Waited turn for prime time carries at Florida. Ended up rushing for 1,152 yards as a senior last fall.

D.J. Harper, Boise State
- After splitting carries during the first five seasons of an injury-plagued career, he rushed for 1,137 yards as a senior in 2012. Finished his career with 41 total touchdowns.

Marcus Lattimore, South Carolina
- Became the first freshman in school-history to crack the 1,000-yard mark in a single-season. Since then, significant knee injuries cut both of his sophomore and junior seasons short.

Joseph Randle, Oklahoma State
- Scored 40 total touchdowns during his sophomore and junior seasons combined.

Stephan Taylor, Stanford
- Toted the rock an incredible 787 times for 3,997 yards and 38 touchdowns over the last three seasons.

Kerwynn Williams, Utah State
- Finished his career with a personal-best 235 rushing yards at the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl last December. Ended up with a 2,209 total yards 20 total touchdowns.

Following the conclusion of the third round, Miami general manager Jeff Ireland talked about the Dolphins’ Day 2 draft picks.

Here is what Ireland had to say about Taylor:

Q: Overall thoughts?
A: “We took Jamar Taylor, a cornerback from Boise State. Great kid. Prototypical size and speed. Very smart. Very physical. Can play inside and outside. So we’re very happy to have him.”

Q: What stood out about Jamar Taylor?
A: “Well, like I said, he’s a great kid. You know what you love about him is he’s very smart. He’s very physical. He’s got very good ball skills. He plays with a great awareness, instinct and so just a combination of all the things he can bring the intelligence, the character, the speed, the physicality, the ball skills. Those are all things that obviously we covet in a cornerback position. And I felt like he had those things. Specifically after combine, I mean we put everybody on the board and so I don’t think there was anything out of the ordinary.”

Q: Will Taylor and third-round pick Will Davis help the secondary create more turnovers?
A: “I think both Will and Jamar have very good ball skills. Taylor is very physical. He can get it out. He can go up and get it or he can knock it out with forced fumbles and PBU’s (pass breakups) and Will, he’s kind of a very, very good at getting the ball out from a PBU standpoint. Both those guys have very good ball skills in my opinion. I think they’re both going to be play makers.”

The two networks are allowed to swap one game a year with each other. With that in mind, ESPN will air Boise State’s game at Fresno State on Sept. 20, while CBS will claimed the Broncos’ home game against Nevada on Oct. 19 in return.

Four Boise State home dates have yet to be picked up for television. According to the parameters of the new TV deal, at least one of them must air on ESPN, ESPN 2 or ABC. The four Boise State matchups they have to chose from: UT-Martin, Southern Miss, Wyoming or New Mexico.

Of the remain three home games, ESPN can broadcast them on either ESPNU, ESPNews or ESPN3, but only two games can appear on the latter web-based medium.

#7SportsInsider
- According to the new Mountain West television contract, Boise State will not earn a bonus for playing in front of a national audience on the CBS Sports Network. The guidelines state Boise State must play on either ESPN, ESPN2, ABC, CBS, NBC or FOX in order to earn the payout. With that in mind, the Broncos’ two Friday night contests scheduled for ESPN will earn them $300,000 apiece.

- The TV bonus bumps up to $500,000 each time Boise State appears on either ESPN, ESPN2, ABC, CBS, NBC or FOX on a Saturday.

- ESPN must pick up at least one more Bronco home game and - permitting a scheduling change - that game will be played on a Saturday. If that were the case, Boise State will earn at least $1.1 million in TV bonuses in 2013.

- The Mountain West said up to 44 football games will be broadcast this fall. ESPN announced seven of them on Tuesday, with CBS adding 21 more on Friday. With up to 16 more games set to air, the conference said both ESPN and CBS will make additional announcements at a later date.
