Jay’s Jargon: Boise State suffers worst loss of Coach Pete Era against Washington

The Boise State football team lost its second straight season-opener on Saturday. As a result, the Broncos fell to 6-2 against Pac-12 schools under head coach Chris Petersen, who is now 84-9 since taking over at Boise State.

Here are some other notes from Saturday’s game…

#BoiseState
> The defeat was easily the worst of the Coach Pete Era. His previous eight losses were by a combine 40 points. Prior to Saturday, the Broncos had posted a total of four losses by a combine 10 points since the beginning of the 2009 season.

Largest margins of defeat under coach Pete:
32 - at Washington (Aug. 31, 2013)
14 - at Washington (Sept. 8, 2007)
12 - at Hawaii (Nov. 23, 2007)
4 - at Michigan State (Aug. 31, 2012)
3 - at Nevada (Nov. 26, 2010)
3 - vs East Carolina* (Dec. 23, 2007)
2 - vs San Diego State (Nov. 3, 2012)
1 - vs TCU (Nov. 12, 2011)
1 - vs TCU* (Dec. 23, 2008)

*Bowl game

> The Boise State offensive lacked explosiveness. Of the 88 total plays they ran, just six went for 10-or-more yards.
Longest run: 18 yards - Ajayi
Longest pass: 16 yards - Southwick to Boldewijn

#7SportsInsider: This marked the first time that Boise State failed to record a pass completion of at least 20 yards in a game since Nov. 23, 2007, a span of 67-games.

#7SportsInsider: This marked the first time that Boise State failed to record an offensive play of at least 20 yards in a game since Sept. 16, 2006, a span of 89-games.

> Senior QB Joe Southwick was an efficient 15-of-19 in the first half (although he threw for just 82 yards). He then started the third quarter by going 6-of-10 for 50 yards on a 72-yard, 18-play drive that resulted in a Boise State field goal to make it a 10-6 game. From there on out, he completed just 4-of-11 passes for 20 yards.

> Sophomore RB Jay Ajayi set a career-high with 23 carries.
Most carries in a single game:
23 - vs Washington (Aug. 31, 2013)
15 - vs Fresno State (Oct. 13, 2012)
9 - vs Southern Miss (Oct. 6, 2012)
9 - vs Nevada (Dec. 1, 2012)
8 - 4 times

> Ajayi’s 93 yards rushing were the second most of his career:
118 - at New Mexico (Sept. 29, 2012)
93 - at Washington (Aug. 31, 2013)
67 - vs Colorado State (Nov. 17, 2012)
54 - at Hawaii (Nov. 10, 2012)
51 - at Nevada (Dec. 1, 2012)

#7SportsInsider: Ajayi actually gained 100 yards rushing from the line of scrimmage for the second time in his career. However, he was stopped behind the line of scrimmage twice, which resulted in negative seven yards, therefore, he ended with 93 net yards rushing.

> True freshman RB Aaron Baltazar was the second runningback used by the Broncos on Saturday. He picked up 49 yards. Last season, Ajayi averaged 49.8 yards per game as the No. 2 runningback.

> Senior WR Geraldo Boldewijn set a career-high for yards (62) and receptions (8). He is well on his way to setting a new career-best for receptions in a single-season.
Total catches by year:
2013 (SR) - 8 (1 game)
2012 (JR) - 18 (9 games)
2011 (SO) - 19 (9 games)
2010 (FR) - 11 (13 games)

> Boldewijn was obviously a big part of the game plan. He was targeted a team-high 11 times vs Washington.
Most targets vs UW:
11 (8 catches) - Boldewijn
9 (6) - Miller
6 (6) - Moore
4 (0) - Burks
3 (3) - Baltazar
2 (2) - Williams-Rhodes
2 (1) - Ajayi
2 (1) - Huff
2 (1) - Linehan
1 (1) - Fields

#7SportsInsider: Senior WR Aaron Burks - arguably Boise State’s best deep threat - was targeted four times but didn’t have a single catch. As for Shane Williams-Rhodes - arguably their best playmaker - he recorded his first offensive touch with less than 1:45 remaining in the game.
(UPDATE: Coach Pete said they have to do a better job of getting Williams-Rhodes the ball at his weekly press conference on Monday. However, he also added that Williams-Rhodes hasn’t been at full health lately. Williams-Rhodes was wearing a cast on his left hand/wrist/lower-forearm area during the Broncos’ final fall scrimmage on Sunday, August 18.)

> Boise State allowed just four passing touchdowns in all of 2012, one of which was by a runningback on a trick play. UW QB Keith Price threw for two on Saturday alone.

> Junior SAM Corey Bell tied a career-high with eight tackles. He previously had eight against Washington in the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas in 2012.

> Sophomore CB Donte Deayon made his second career start on Saturday and intercepted his second career pass.

#UWHuskies
> Washington scored on four of five possessions in the second half. The Huskies had scoring drives of 61, 64, 77 and 51 yards. They outscored Boise State 28-3 over the final 30 minutes.

> After running for 205 yards against Boise State in the bowl game last December, junior RB Bishop Sankey picked up 161 more yards on the ground on Saturday.
Totals vs Boise State (2 games): 55 carries, 366 yards (6.7 ypc), 2 touchdowns

> Senior QB Keith Price tossed two touchdown passes on Saturday, giving him 56 for his career. It vaulted him past Caldwell-native Cody Pickett for the most in UW history.
