Boise State climbs to No. 22 in the USA Today Coaches Poll

The Boise State football team moved from No. 25 to No. 22 in the USA Today Coaches Poll on Sunday.

The Broncos received 197 points - up from 83 last week - following their 40-14 victory over Southern Mississippi.

Boise State benefitted from eight teams losing in the last week’s top 25, including previously ranked No. 20 Nebraska (L, 63-38 vs Ohio State), No. 22 Northwestern (L, 39-28 vs Penn State) and No. 24 Texas Tech (L, 40-17 vs No. 14 Oklahoma)

This ties the highest the Broncos have been ranked in the coaches poll this season. Prior to the Michigan State game they checked in at No. 22 after receiving a season-high 217 points.

One other thing worth mentioning is that the Big Ten does not have a team ranked in the coaches poll for the first time in history.
Although Ohio State is undefeated, rules prevent coaches from voting for the Buckeyes since they are on probation and not eligible for the postseason.
With this in mind, No. 28 Michigan, No. 29 Northwestern, No. 30 Michigan State and No. 32 Nebraska all sit outside the top 25, meaning Boise State would only need a top 16 finish in order to secure the non-AQ automatic bid to a BCS bowl game.
The first BCS standings will be released next week. The coaches poll accounts for one-third of a team’s overall BCS score.
